Newsletter from The Reverend Greg Smith 3rd October 2021

Dear friends

Some of you may have seen the ITV quiz programme The Chase which is shown at tea-time on weekdays. Some of you may even have seen the spin-off programme Beat the Chasers which is currently being shown on Saturday nights at 8.30 on ITV. During the last series, I was doing quite well answering the questions from the comfort of my sofa, when Fran suggested I should apply to go on. One lengthy application form and two auditions later, having fought off 20,000 other applicants, I found myself at Elstree Studios in London one Thursday in August standing next to Bradley Walsh answering questions as best I could. I won’t say anything about the outcome so as not to spoil the suspense, but also because I’m not sure what will make the edit. I often reference quiz shows when preaching on the passages in which Jesus asks his disciples who do you say I am? Even when questions potentially net you thousands of pounds, getting this question right remains the most important.

If you want to see how I got on, tune in at 8.30 this Saturday to ITV or record it. Remember it’s not live, so it’s no good texting me the answers!

Children’s Society

Correction to the total mentioned in last week’s bulletin. The actual amount raised at the Children’s Society coffee morning was £510. An outstanding achievement. Thanks to all who contributed and special thanks to Irene for her hospitality.

Sponsored Walk

Anyone who kindly sponsored the walkers last Saturday should bring their sponsorship to the church of their choice at their earliest convenience and by no later than October 17th. Monies can be placed in an envelope and clearly marked sponsored walk. If you have not sponsored the walkers, but would like to do so retrospectively, your gift would be gratefully received. The sponsorship (currently in excess of £1300) will be shared between the church of your choice and Shropshire Historic Churches Trust.

Harvest Charity

As a family, we will be supporting the charity Water Aid. Each church will take a collection at the harvest service and we will then make a combined donation to this important charity that provides clean water to the developing world. We are also pleased to receive donations for Foodbank.

Harvest services are as follows:

Shelve Oct 3rd at 9 a.m.

Pontesbury Oct 3rd at 10.30

Snailbeach Oct 3rd at 2.30 p.m.

Hope Oct 17th at 9 a.m.

Minsterley Oct 17th at 10.30

Tea Service

St George’s is going to relaunch its Tea Service on Tues Oct 5th at 2.30 p.m. The service is open to anyone across the group who finds it difficult to attend on Sunday mornings. There will be a short communion service in the West End Room, followed by Tea.

Greg would like to review our practice in relation to baptisms across the family so that we can be consistent and welcoming to all the families who approach us. We will need to look at questions around administration, legalities, preparation, and aftercare. Being part of a working group does not mean that you will be obliged to join a baptism team. Rather, it would be good to do some collaborative thinking together. If interested, please contact him via or 07902 794653

Listen Again

A reminder that if you miss church on a Sunday morning, a sermon and some notices are posted on our respective websites early the following week. Thanks to Alistair Bates for continuing to process this.
