Newsletter 8th December 2023
We are sliding deeper into the darkness as the year draws to a close; we are just two weeks away from the winter solstice, the “shortest day” of the year and the mornings are getting darker and darker for longer and longer! It seems spiritually dark as well, as we scan the news headlines with stories of war, rape, murder and the latest failure of government. It doesn’t appear to change does it?
However in our Advent readings for this coming Sunday, it is a little bit like getting blinded in the eyes by a bright light, shining out amid all the dark, for John the baptizer appears looking wild and crazy in his camel hair clothes, yelling “Are you ready for the coming King?”, “Get yourself ready and repent for the king is on his way!”
Repent for the King is coming; a sense of something momentous happening and it seems to me that as we look around our country, repentance might be something we seriously consider as we lead up to Christmas and the celebration of the arrival of our Lord. Advent is a time where we remind ourselves that he will be coming back again and this time as the King and judge of everything. Get yourself ready for the King is coming!
