Newsletter 28th October 2022

Dear friends

I have been reminded today of the terrible struggles those who suffer with eating disorders (Bulimia, anorexia and binge eating) face. Many lose their lives each year and many more have their lives disfigured by these destructive conditions. People who suffer in this way will often be very secretive and so it’s not always easy to spot, but where it becomes apparent, usually only expert treatment can help. You might as well say to someone with diabetes “pull your socks up” as say this to someone whose relationship with food is hurting them. I was also reminded that there is a qualitative difference between an eating disorder and disordered eating. I suffer from disordered eating (I can’t deny it), which means I find eating one biscuit almost impossible and will keep helping myself until the packet is empty. I remember wondering whether the distinction was meaningful, until I talked at length to sufferers and understood that they think about food all the time whereas I generally only think about it when someone offers me lemon drizzle cake (admittedly that is nearly every day in Shropshire!) The question arises: what occupies our minds on a day-to-day basis? Do we dwell on the things of God or only when someone puts them right in front of us? Unlike an obsession with food, being wholehearted about our faith is actually good for us.
