Newsletter 26th May 2023

Dear all

I had the great joy of taking an RE class for Year 3 at Pontesbury School this week. The central question I had been asked to address was what does a Vicar do all day? You may well have asked yourself the same question. It’s something I’ve talked about many times to primary school children, so I am well versed in their misconceptions. The average television drama seems to think Vicars are either to be found tidying hymn books at the back of church or down the pub helping to solve the latest murder in the village. Children can therefore be forgiven their ignorance. However, what appears to have changed over the years is that children also now have no idea what a church service is like (that we pray, read the Bible, sing hymns, share bread & wine). We continue to work hard to address this with St George’s Explorers (see below), Messy Church, Little Dragons, and Trinity Tots. But we also need to pray fervently for a reconnect.

Meanwhile, they had remembered seven of the nine fruits of the Spirit from my assembly the day before, which you may think is more important. I wonder how many of you could manage that!

Revd Fran Brealey

We are delighted to announce that the appointment of Revd Fran Brealey as Associate Minister for our group, with lead responsibility for Hope/Shelve has been confirmed. Fran will be licensed at Holy Trinity Hope on Tuesday 13th June at 7 p.m. followed by a reception at Hope Village Hall. We appreciate that this is quite short notice, but it would be wonderful to have a good turnout from across the Pontesbury & Stiperstones family. Please pray for Fran and her husband Mike who move into Pontesbury on 7th June. Fran will attend PCC on 14th June and then properly start work on the 19th.

Ascension to Pentecost

The period from Ascension (May 18th) to Pentecost (May 28th) is designated by the church as Thy Kingdom Come. This is envisaged as a time of prayer for your friends, family, and community. You can visit https://www.thykingdomcome.global/videos each day and a new short video will be posted to help you in your prayers. This Sunday May 28th there will be a Group Service at Minsterley at 10.30 a.m. and a special Deanery Service that evening at 6 p.m. at St George’s to which everyone is warmly invited.

Pentecost Experience

St George’s is hosting a time of prayer from 3-6 p.m. this Sunday prior to the Deanery Service. Stations are set up around the church for anyone to come for private prayer and meditation. You may spend as little or as long as you like in prayer, using the stations to inspire you. Refreshments will be served.

Heart Procedure

Greg would be grateful for your prayers this afternoon (Friday) as he undergoes a minor heart procedure (cardioversion – shocking the heart back into rhythmn) at The Princess Royal.

St George’s Explorers

The latest edition of St George’s Explorers, aimed at families who want to explore the great outdoors of God’s creation, takes place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. meeting outside the church for Pentecost related activities.

Habberley Services

There is to be a new pattern of services at St Mary’s Habberley, starting next month. The first Sunday of the month will be BCP Evensong at 5 p.m. the second Sunday Morning Worship at 10.30 and fourth Sunday Holy Communion at 10.30 a.m.

Spring Harvest

We are planning a further trip to Spring Harvest next year, 1-5 April 2024. If you would like to know more about what a trip to Spring Harvest entails, please speak to someone who attended. To reserve a place, please contact Greg and if you would like a place on a coach Susan Lockwood at susanlockwood345@btinternet.com We need people to make a decision by the end of May, since booking lines open in June and it is expected to sell out very quickly.

Ecclesiastical Insurance

You may not be aware that if you take out home insurance with Ecclesiastical Insurance, they will donate £130 to a church of your choice. When your renewal comes up, it may be worth checking whether they are competitive.

High Places Communion

Through this Year of Prayer, the Bishop is leading services of Holy Communion in High Places across the Diocese. As part of this programme, there is to be a service of Holy Communion at the top of Stiperstones on Monday 5th June at 5.15 p.m. The party are meeting at 4.30 p.m. in Knolls carpark and walking to the summit. Although we have been given relatively short notice, it would be lovely to have plenty of local representation.

Songs of Praise

We have all been warmly invited by Pontesbury Baptist Church to a Songs of Praise evening on Sunday June 4th at 6.30 p.m. We have had a wonderful time on previous occasions. Do join us if you can.

Teddy Bears Picnic

There is to be a Teddy Bears Picnic at St George’s on Sunday 11th June from 3-4.30 p.m. We would be grateful for anyone who is able to volunteer to help at this event. Please get in touch with Greg or Mary this week.

Plant Sale

There will be a plant sale hosted by HTM on the carpark of The Crown & Sceptre this Saturday from 10-12. Come early to get the best selection.

Learning new songs

There have been many wonderful new worship songs written over the last decade or so. We tend not to sing them in our churches because people don’t already know them. Therefore, St George’s will be hosting a new songs workshop on Weds June 14th at 7 p.m. We are happy to take requests in advance, the primary stipulation being that the song/hymn must have been written this century.
