Newsletter 21st October 2022

Dear friends

“Never apologise, never explain” are words that have been variously attributed to Winston Churchill, King Charles I and John Wayne. They are of course not words that you will find in the Bible, which is quite big on saying sorry when we get it wrong. I have been musing on this this week, following Liz Truss’s (who may or may not be our Prime Minister by the time you read this) apology to parliament. The apology doesn’t appear to have won any of her critics over, but it seems a shame that there isn’t any recognition that this marks a sharp break with the past when politicians would deny having done anything wrong even when everyone knew they had; or would apologise in the infamous words of Pritti Patel: “I’m sorry if you’re upset by what I’ve done” which isn’t an apology at all. Of course, apologies are just words, but you would struggle to find a clearer example of repentance than the PM’s reversing nearly all her policies within a week of announcing them. Whether we are in politics or not, it’s hard to say sorry (Elton John said so), but even if the apology doesn’t entirely repair the wrong that we have done others, it does wonderfully repair our relationship with God.
