Newsletter 12th May 2023
Well, wasn’t the coronation rather marvellous? A feast for the eyes if you enjoy pomp and ceremony like I do; the Guards in perfect formation, the music, (especially Zadok the Priest during Charles’ Anointing), the significance of the various regalia and what they meant and signified – I found it brought me out of myself and the humdrum of the present day and instead into a kind of mysterious enchantment where images of our medieval past walked and the wall between the physical and the spiritual felt thinner – there was even the rumoured appearance of a ghost!
It’s important to be “re-enchanted”, to remember that promises to liege lords and spurs and swords don’t have to be dismissed as childish fantasies, but can speak to us today of how we are to stand up for justice and righteousness, for God and King these things still have meaning. Don’t let the greyness which imbues so much of modern life get you down – step into the colour, embrace it and let the kings and queens, knights and maidens walk with you as you go about your day. If you let them, then they generally point to a deeper reality, a “deeper magic” of God and mystery made present in Jesus Christ.
Congratulations to Allen Marsden who has been elected as the new PCC Secretary for St George’s; and thanks again to Val Butterworth for all her hard work over many years.
Ascension to Pentecost
There period from Ascension (May 18th) to Pentecost (May 28th) is designated by the church as Thy Kingdom Come. This is envisaged as a time of prayer for your friends, family, and community. The period will start with a Group Service at St George’s on Thurs 18th at 7 p.m. and conclude on Sunday 28th with a Group Service at Minsterley. There will be a special Deanery Service that evening at 6 p.m. at St George’s to which everyone is warmly invited. You can visit https://www.thykingdomcome.global/videos each day and a new short video will be posted to help you in your prayers. There will be a prayer walk on Ascension Day from 12-2 p.m. (Please see attached poster for details)
The bi-monthly repair shop hosted by St George’s takes place this Saturday, May 13th from 10-12. Do take advantage of this wonderful facility. While no guarantees are offered, they have had good numbers of very satisfied customers. There is no charge for their service, although donations are much appreciated.
The focus of this week’s sermons at Hope and Minsterley will be on John 14 and the work of the Holy Spirit.
Greg and Fran will be on holiday next week from Monday through to Sunday. In an emergency, please contact Richard at email@example.com
The group that attended Spring Harvest in Skegness just after Easter universally had a great time. Therefore, we are planning a further trip next year, 1-5 April 2024. If you would like to know more about what a trip to Spring Harvest entails, please speak to someone who attended. To reserve a place, please contact Greg and if you would like a place on a coach Susan Lockwood at firstname.lastname@example.org We need people to make a decision by the end of May, since booking lines open in June and it is expected to sell out very quickly.
Di and Andy Lockyer are hosting a coffee morning at Brook Cottage, SY5 0BE, this Saturday from 10-12 in aid of Minsterley church funds.
Church services at Cliffdale have switched to the first Wednesday of the month at 11 a.m. There are a good number of representatives of other churches, but rather less from St George’s. There is no expectation of members of the team coming every time and no need to do anything more than sing along to the hymns and chat with the residents. Please speak to Greg if you want to know more.

We have all been warmly invited by Pontesbury Baptist Church to a Songs of Praise evening on Sunday June 4th at 6.30 p.m. We have had a wonderful time on previous occasions. Do join us if you can.
